HIDR Website Redesign

A redesign focused on information structure and navigation for a Nepal-based research and development organization with a large body of publications.

View live site

Overview

HIDR (Himal Innovative Development & Research) works on rights-based development, with a focus on women, children and marginalized communities. Its website needs to present who they are, what they offer, and a large library of research.

My role

UI/UX Designer

Problem

Research organizations publish a lot: reports, policy briefs, annual reports, books and blogs. Without clear structure, important work gets buried and visitors, such as partners, donors and job seekers, can't find what they came for. The existing site needed better information structure and navigation.

Users

  • Partners and donors assessing credibility
  • Researchers and readers looking for publications
  • Job seekers and potential collaborators

Process

  1. Reviewed the existing site's content and navigation.
  2. Reorganized the structure into clear groups: Who We Are, Opportunities, Publications and Blog.
  3. Broke publications into types (reports, policy briefs, annual reports, books) so each is easy to find.
  4. Designed a hero and calls to action that communicate the mission and point to the organization's work and publications.
  5. Created responsive layouts and handed designs to developers.

Key design decisions

Navigation grouped by visitor intent

Menus follow what people want to do (learn about HIDR, find opportunities, read publications), not the organization's internal structure.

Navigation follows visitor intent, with publications grouped into findable types.

Publications split by type

Reports, briefs, annual reports and books each get their own path, so a large library stays easy to browse.

Mission-led homepage

The homepage opens with the organization's purpose and two clear next steps: explore the work, or read the publications.

Outcome

A live site with clearer structure and navigation that gives the organization's research and community work a stronger home.
